WHAT WILL I STUDY?

 How will I be assessed?

The assessment methods include course work, such as essays, reports and case studies, in-class tests and examinations, presentations and group work, such as group poster presentations, group wikis and taking part in a case conference. Working in groups is an important attribute and as part of the assessment process you will work in groups with others. However, your contribution will be individually graded and you will receive a grade based on your contribution to the assessed group work At Level 4, coursework, in-class assessments and examinations allow you to demonstrate your understanding of policy, legislation and key issues in health/social care. In subsequent years, at higher levels, you will demonstrate your ability to problem-solve, assess differing arguments and apply your learning. On some of the units you do at Level 4 and 5, assessments also include non-graded elements such as writing plans where you receive feedback prior to producing the final assignment. The tutor feedback on the different assessments will help you develop transferable skills and knowledge steadily across the course allowing you to improve your performance on subsequent assessments.

About The Course:

The BSc (Hons) Business Accounting programme is designed to provide you with the appreciation of, and insight into, the role of accounting in the context of business governance, project management and accounting information systems. Throughout your studies you will build your knowledge and understanding of the conceptual and practical aspects of accounting, providing a foundation for further study or professional development depending on your chosen career path.

In your first year, you will study 6 compulsory modules which are designed to give a solid grounding in the subject area of accounting and prepare you for a more detailed exploration of the subject in your second year.

In the second and final year, you will be required to devote more time to ethics, governance and controversial accounting principles. You will study accounting rules and apply accounting skills. There is more emphasis on discussion, critical evaluation, reflection and anticipation of likely future developments in accounting.

Teaching and Assessment

You will be actively involved in a range of learning, teaching and assessment approaches as part of BSc (Hons) Business Accounting. Such active approaches aim to put you in the centre of your learning so you are involved and engaged in all aspects of your assessment and learning. Your programme will require your active participation in learning activities and engagement with your fellow students both individually and collaboratively, working and learning with other students. Learning activities may also occur both within and outside the classroom.

All learning and teaching take place in seminar sized groups and within these sessions, you will be presented with a wide variety of learning opportunities including formal lectures, seminars, guest speakers, online videos – prequels and sequels, fortnightly round-ups. Fortnightly Round-Ups are one hour online live chat sessions with your module tutor on MyLearning. These are open to all students on the module.

You will have 12 hours per week of contact time throughout your programme and will be expected to engage in 28 hours per week of self-study time. If you choose to study the daytime course, the course will be delivered across 2 days each week. If you choose to study the evening and weekend option, tuition will be on 2 evenings and a Saturday each week.

Your learning will also be supported by technology. Increasingly your tutors will be using existing and emerging learning technologies to engage you in e-learning activities. Your programme will be facilitated using a variety of media and online tools (MyLearning on UniHub, podcasts, wikis etc) which will allow you flexible access to a diverse range of online resources, quizzes and learning materials as well as collaborative tools with which you can engage and learn with your peers.

Sage accounting software will be used in your Accounting Information Systems module where you will have the opportunity for external certification.

Overview

The MSc International Business aims to allow students to acquire mastery of both the macro and micro contexts of international business, and is designed to enable students to acquire, develop, and integrate international business theory, and develop the skills to then apply this in terms of international business practice. The Masters dissertation provides the opportunity to conceive, design and implement satisfactorily a substantial research project within the broad subject area of international business.

The course is offered on both a full-time and part-time basis at the Magee campus, and as such it attracts a variety of students with different educational needs: business studies graduates wishing to pursue a career in international business, mature students wishing to improve career options and develop expertise, and business practitioners wishing to acquire the knowledge, skills and tools necessary to enable them to compete in a rapidly developing and constantly evolving global business environment. In recent years the course has also attracted growing numbers of EU and international students keen to pursue careers in this field.

Computing Systems develops skills in subjects that include programming, databases, networking, web development, human computer interaction, artificial intelligence, security and even embedded systems design. MODULES
Courses are continually reviewed to take advantage of new teaching approaches and developments in research, industry and the professions. Please be aware that modules may change. The exact modules available, as in any programme, may vary depending on course updates, staff availability, timetabling and student demand.

Uniquely, BSc Computing Systems is designed using a Variable Rate Progression (VRP) model. Consequently, you may design your own personal pathway through the modules of the course, something that is not possible in traditional courses. The precise pathway, its duration and specific modules, are determined by each student. Many potential pathways exist.

The programme may be completed in 3, 4, 5 or 6 years, dependent on the precise pathway you derive. Note that should you enter the course in February, rather than September, the minimum duration of the course will be four years.
Attendance

Computing Systems is delivered on a Monday afternoon and evening during Semesters 1 and 2 (September-May). There are also 6-12 days of block training during Semester 3 (around the end of June and beginning of August). Typcial weekly timetabled hours involve 3.5-7hours scheduled for delivery between 1.15pm and 9.15pm. This contact time accounts for around 1/3 of the expected self-directed study time for each module.

The duration of the degree is dependent on the number of modules you study and successfully completed each year. There are six modules at each of three levels in the course. Each year, you can choose undertake a minimum of three modules and a maximum of six modules. This empowers you to complete the course in as little as three years or to choose a slower track lasting four, five or even six years.

Career options
Graduates of BSc Hons Computing Systems are well equiped for a broad range of professional careers within computing, software engineering, web development and database administration, and in fields related to software engineering processes and quality assurance.

Students from this course will be eligible to enter graduate employment or to undertake further study at Master's or PhD level.

About this course
The overall aim of the MSc Marketing course is to provide an academically challenging, intellectually stimulating programme of study that educates, develops and enhances the professional competence of students of marketing and business.

About this course

The MBA with Advanced Practice is a general management course aimed at aspiring and established middle managers from a range of business sectors. The Advanced Practice element offers students the opportunity to gain valuable workplace environment experience.

The course has been designed to account for current (local, regional and international) market trends and has recently been updated to provide additional flexibility, choice and the opportunity and to help apply taught management skills.

The overall objective of this course is to educate and develop individuals as managers and business specialists, adding value through an integrated, applied and critical understanding of management and organisations, as well as the development of professional, transferable and intellectual skills that are essential for successful general and strategic management in private, public and third sector organisations.

Students will have the opportunity to develop knowledge, skills and insight in the following areas:

Develop multidisciplinary and international perspectives, concepts and issues in the major management disciplines

Gain an understanding of relevant toolkits and techniques for analysing business and management issues
Cultivate the ability to analyse, synthesise and apply knowledge and understanding to solve management problems critically, rationally and rigorously

Advanced Practice

The compulsory Advanced Practice element of this programme takes place after you have studied 8 taught modules at the Masters stage and will enable you to undertake a 15 week long internship, or applied consulting project, working with a real organisation on a live business problem. This gives you the opportunity to gain experience of the workplace environment and/or practical experience of the “real world” issues faced by those currently engaged in marketing.

The Advance Practice stage module provides an excellent way to put your learning into practice and hence, enhance your employability. It also provides you with an enhanced knowledge of the workplace which will facilitate the completion of your Dissertation. Please note if you undertake an internship this maybe paid or unpaid.
Course Duration

On successful completion of each stage of this programme of study, the duration will be 21 months.

Teaching methods
